Erik ten Hag, the manager of Manchester United, recently disclosed that his summer break in Ibiza was unexpectedly interrupted by club management, who expressed their desire for him to stay on board.
Speaking to Dutch TV channel NOS, Ten Hag recounted the visit: “The club management came to me while I was on holiday in Ibiza. They suddenly showed up on my doorstep and told me they wanted to continue with me.”
This development follows speculation about Ten Hag’s future, which was uncertain until he guided United to victory in the FA Cup final. Despite finishing eighth in the Premier League last season, United opted to retain the Dutchman, amidst considerations involving new co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe and other potential candidates.
“Manchester United have told me that they spoke with Tuchel, but they eventually came to the conclusion that they already have the best manager,” Ten Hag confirmed.
Reflecting on his achievements, Ten Hag highlighted his debut season successes with United, securing third place in the Premier League, as well as reaching the finals of the Carabao Cup and FA Cup. His tenure further saw United clinch the EFL Cup in 2023.
While Ten Hag enjoys the backing of the United board, negotiations for a new contract are still ongoing. “Manchester United and I still have to find an agreement for the new contract. This isn’t easily done – we are still going to have to talk about this,” he clarified.
The situation underscores ongoing deliberations between the club and Ten Hag as they seek to formalize their collaboration going forward.
