Real Madrid have officially announced the signing of Kylian Mbappe on a free transfer from Paris Saint-Germain. The French international will join the Spanish and European champions on a five-year deal once his contract with PSG expires at the end of June.
Following the announcement, Mbappe shared his excitement on social media:
“A dream come true, So happy and proud to join the club of my dream, Real Madrid. Nobody can understand how excited I am right now. Can’t wait to see you, Madridistas, and thanks for your unbelievable support. ¡Hala Madrid!”
The 25-year-old forward is currently with the French national team ahead of UEFA Euro 2024. Although he had expressed a desire to participate in the Olympic Games in Paris later this summer, he was not included in the Olympic squad announced on Monday.
Fresh from their record 15th UEFA Champions League triumph over the weekend, Real Madrid have secured Mbappe’s signature on a contract running until 2029 at Santiago Bernabeu. The star player is expected to take the number 9 jersey as he joins from PSG.
Mbappe leaves PSG having secured six Ligue 1 titles, four Coupe de France trophies, and having reached one UEFA Champions League final and two semifinals during his six-year tenure at Parc des Princes. This past season, PSG reached the Champions League semifinals, where they were defeated by Borussia Dortmund, who subsequently lost 2-0 to Real Madrid in the final at Wembley.
Mbappe, a native of Bondy, began his professional career with AS Monaco. He gained international recognition with his contributions to Monaco’s 2016-17 Ligue 1 victory and France’s triumph at the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia.
Individually, Mbappe was instrumental in leading France to the 2022 World Cup final in Qatar, where they were narrowly defeated by Argentina in a thrilling match. His then PSG teammate, Lionel Messi, played a crucial role in Argentina’s victory.
At Real Madrid, Mbappe is expected to enhance an already formidable attacking lineup, which includes Champions League final hero Vinicius Junior, Jude Bellingham, Rodrygo, and fellow new arrival Endrick. He will also join compatriots Aurelien Tchouameni, Eduardo Camavinga, and Ferland Mendy, all part of Didier Deschamps’ squad for Euro 2024, where Mbappe will serve as the captain for the pre-tournament favorites.
