Barcelona Football Club has officially announced the appointment of Hansi Flick as their new head coach, succeeding Xavi Hernández. Flick, the former Bayern Munich coach, famously led Bayern to an 8-2 victory over Barcelona in the Champions League quarterfinals in 2020.
The 59-year-old Flick has inked a two-year contract with Barcelona, expressing his excitement and honor in joining the prestigious club. “It’s a big honor and also a dream for me to sign my contract here in Barcelona, to work for this amazing club,” Flick remarked.
Flick’s coaching prowess was demonstrated during his tenure at Bayern Munich, where he clinched the Champions League and secured consecutive German league titles. His hunger for success remains strong as he embarks on this new journey with Barcelona, stating, “I won some titles with Bayern Munich and my hunger is really big for titles. I would like to stay on this path with Barcelona.”
Barcelona emphasized Flick’s coaching style, characterized by high pressing, intensity, and daring play, which has garnered him success at both club and international levels. Flick himself highlighted the alignment of his and the club’s philosophies around ball possession and attacking football, stating, “These are the things I love.”
Flick inherits a squad boasting a mix of experienced players and young talents, a combination he aims to nurture and develop further. “Barcelona has one of the best academies in the world and a good mix between experienced players and young talented players. We have to groove them (so) that they can improve. This is our job,” Flick commented.
The German tactician’s arrival marks a new chapter for Barcelona, following Xavi Hernández’s departure after the team’s second-place finish in the Spanish league this season. Xavi, a midfield legend at Barcelona, bid farewell to the club after coaching his last game, a 2-1 win against Sevilla.
Flick’s coaching pedigree extends beyond club football, having also served as the head coach of the German national team. His reunion with former Bayern striker Robert Lewandowski, now at Barcelona, adds another dimension to his coaching tenure.
Flick becomes the third German coach in Barcelona’s history, joining the ranks of Hennes Weisweiler and Udo Lattek. His appointment signifies Barcelona’s commitment to reclaiming its position among Europe’s football elite.
The announcement of Flick’s appointment signals a new era for Barcelona, as they aim to build upon their rich footballing heritage under the guidance of their new head coach.
