Xavi, the outgoing Barcelona manager, has issued a cautionary message to his successor, emphasizing the challenges inherent in the role. The 44-year-old Spaniard, who was relieved of his duties before overseeing Barcelona’s final game of the season, a 2-1 victory against Sevilla, spoke candidly about the demanding nature of managing the club.
Hansi Flick, the former Germany and Bayern Munich manager, is poised to assume the managerial reins at Camp Nou following Xavi’s departure. Despite being under contract until 2025, Xavi’s tenure at the club was cut short, prompting reflections on his time in charge.
Xavi initially intended to leave Barcelona in January but later reversed his decision, announcing his commitment to the club in April. Reflecting on his departure, he remarked, “To the new manager, I tell you: ‘You will suffer.’ This is a very complicated place to be. This is a difficult job, and you have to be patient.”
Having taken charge in November 2021, Xavi enjoyed success in his inaugural full season, securing La Liga and the Spanish Super Cup titles. However, Barcelona’s performance this season saw them finish second in La Liga, trailing champions Real Madrid by 10 points.
Xavi’s dismissal came shortly after the club confirmed his continued tenure, with reported tensions arising from his remarks regarding Barcelona’s financial challenges. Expressing his sentiments, Xavi stated, “I have the feeling that everything I have done in these two and a half years has caused an earthquake. I have been targeted many times in many situations.”
Acknowledging his departure, Xavi expressed openness to new opportunities while recognizing the need for rest. “It’s so difficult to coach Barcelona,” he admitted. “It’s been tough last week, but I have my conscience very clear. I’m proud and happy.”
Xavi’s departure underscores the complexities of managing one of Europe’s most prestigious football clubs, with his tenure marked by both triumphs and challenges.
