Violent clashes erupted between supporters of Lyon and Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) on a highway near the city of Lille ahead of Saturday’s French Cup final, resulting in 30 injuries and 10 arrests.
According to officials from the Prefecture of France’s northern region, 14 of the injured required medical attention, while eight police officers sustained minor injuries during the altercation, which involved over 200 fans and occurred around 6 p.m. local time. One bus was set on fire, and two others were damaged during the confrontation.
Despite heightened security measures and police escorts for fan buses from both clubs, the incidents unfolded, underscoring the persistent threat of hooliganism surrounding football matches.
Lyon and PSG ultras, known for their longstanding rivalry, were en route to Villeneuve d’Ascq for the final. Images circulating online depicted clashes between opposing factions, with one group dressed in dark clothing representing PSG and the other clad in white symbolizing Lyon. Some individuals wore balaclavas to conceal their identities as they engaged in violence.
Bertrand Gaume, the prefect for upper France, commended law enforcement for their swift intervention, which helped prevent further escalation of violence.
The clash was not the only instance of fan misconduct during the day, as PSG supporters also disrupted the youth French Cup final by throwing projectiles at Marseille Under-19 goalkeeper Aboubaka Dosso, resulting in a 10-minute suspension of play.
Due to preparations for the Paris Olympics at Stade de France, the French Cup final was relocated to Stade Pierre Mauroy near Lille.
