Kylian Mbappé has officially announced his departure from Paris Saint-Germain (PSG), confirming widespread speculation about his move to Real Madrid.
In a video statement released on Friday, Mbappé stated, “I never thought it would be this difficult to leave my country. I think I needed this, a new challenge after seven years.” He expressed gratitude towards PSG, acknowledging, “It’s a club I will keep in my mind for my entire life.”
Following the announcement, Mbappé reportedly met with PSG ultras, known as CUP (Paris Ultras Collective), to discuss tributes for his final home game against Toulouse on Sunday.
The 25-year-old, who captains France, joined PSG in 2017 from Monaco in a record deal worth 180 million euros. Despite PSG rejecting a bid of the same amount from Madrid in 2021, Mbappé has opted not to extend his contract with PSG.
“It’s my last year at Paris St-Germain. I will not extend and the adventure will come to an end in a few weeks.” Mbappe said. Mbappé thanked his teammates and coaches, including Unai Emery, Thomas Tuchel, Mauricio Pochettino, Christophe Galtier, and Luis Enrique.
With 255 goals for PSG, Mbappé leaves behind a legacy marked by his trademark moves. However, his tenure at PSG also witnessed shortcomings, particularly in the Champions League.
On Tuesday night, he trudged off the field as PSG exited the Champions League semifinals, suffering consecutive 1-0 defeats to Borussia Dortmund in both legs.
His departure marks the end of an era for PSG, which saw the likes of Neymar, Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Edinson Cavani, and Lionel Messi pass through its ranks without securing a Champions League title.
Mbappé’s move to Real Madrid comes as the Spanish powerhouse seeks its 15th Champions League title. His last game for PSG will be in the French Cup final against Lyon, preceding Madrid’s clash with Borussia Dortmund in the Champions League final.
While Mbappé’s exit poses a significant challenge for PSG, it opens a new chapter for the French star as he aims for further success with Real Madrid.
