Logan Sargeant’s tenure with Williams has come to an end.
The American driver has been replaced for the remainder of the 2024 Formula 1 season following a practice crash before the Dutch Grand Prix. Sargeant was unable to participate in qualifying after his car could not be repaired in time due to damage sustained in FP3.
Franco Colapinto, a driver from Formula 2, will take over Sargeant’s seat starting with the Italian Grand Prix this Sunday. Colapinto’s appointment marks the first time an Argentine driver will compete in Formula 1 since 2001.
Sargeant, 23, scored only one point over his 36-race career with Williams. He made his Formula 1 debut in 2023, with his sole point coming at the United States Grand Prix in October. Although he finished 10th in that race, he was officially classified in 12th due to post-race disqualifications of Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc.
Last season, Sargeant ended up at the bottom of the points standings among drivers who completed all 22 races. This season, his best result was an 11th-place finish at Silverstone. Sargeant missed the Australian Grand Prix when Alex Albon used his car after a practice crash, highlighting concerns about his future with the team.
Williams had already announced that Sargeant would not return in 2025, with Carlos Sainz set to join the team next season. Following Sargeant’s recent crash in the Netherlands, speculation about his future intensified, with Red Bull reserve driver Liam Lawson mentioned as a potential replacement for the Monza race, though no deal was finalized.
Colapinto’s debut at the Italian Grand Prix will be a notable event, as he becomes the first Argentine driver in Formula 1 in over two decades.
