Formula One driver Alex Albon has put an end to speculation surrounding his future in the sport by penning a multi-year contract extension with the Williams Racing team.
The announcement came from the F1 outfit on Wednesday, coinciding with the lead-up to the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix set to take place this weekend.
British-born Thai racer Alex Albon, previously rumored to be courted by both Red Bull and Mercedes, had his contract with Williams running through 2025.
Williams Racing disclosed that the fresh agreement will see Albon remain with the team “through the forthcoming era of Formula 1 regulations,” slated to commence in 2026. However, specific terms were not disclosed.
Expressing his contentment, Albon stated in a press release, “I am incredibly happy to be remaining with Williams Racing and to continue working with such a talented and dedicated team of people.”
At 28 years old, Albon is currently in his third consecutive season with Williams, yet to secure any championship points this year.
Acknowledging the challenging start to the season, Albon remarked, “It has been a difficult start to the year but since joining Williams, we have made significant progress together, and I have seen the huge changes happening behind the scenes to take us back to the front of the grid.”
Albon initiated his F1 career in 2019 with Red Bull’s junior team before parting ways with Red Bull in 2020. He contributed 27 points last season, aiding Williams in clinching seventh place in the constructors’ championship, the team’s best result in six years.
“We are delighted to secure Alex’s long-term future with Williams Racing,” commented Williams Team Principal James Vowles. “He has exceptional talent, technical input, and dedication to the cause, and this is a huge vote of confidence in Williams and the journey back to competitiveness that we are on.”
The Emilia Romagna Grand Prix is scheduled for Sunday.
