The WNBA has reversed its decision regarding the second technical foul assessed to Chicago Sky rookie Angel Reese during Tuesday night’s game against the New York Liberty. The incident, which occurred with 2:31 remaining in the game, sparked controversy and subsequent action from league officials.
Referee Charles Watson initially called a personal foul on Reese during a rebounding altercation. Following a brief protest from Reese, Watson swiftly issued two technical fouls, resulting in her ejection from the game. Post-game, Sky coach Teresa Weatherspoon expressed frustration at the lack of clarity surrounding the call, stating, “I tried to get an explanation. I did not. I don’t know to this moment what has happened.”
Reese refrained from addressing the issue with reporters directly but took to social media to express her gratitude towards Chicago Bulls guard Lonzo Ball, who offered to cover her potential fine. Ball labeled the ejection as “weak,” prompting Reese to acknowledge his support.
In a pool report, head official Maj Forsberg specified that Reese’s technical fouls were attributed to “disrespectfully addressing” the official and “waving her hand in dismissal.” Despite the controversy, Reese concluded the game with a commendable performance, registering 13 points and 10 rebounds.
Teammate Marina Mabrey emphasized the importance of maintaining composure, particularly for younger players in the WNBA, stating, “You’ve got to get to know refs and how they respond to things.”
Notably, Chicago Bulls guard Lonzo Ball pledged to cover the $400 fine Reese would have incurred from the league for the technical fouls. It’s worth mentioning that accumulation of seven technical fouls during the regular season results in a one-game suspension.
Reese’s handling of media obligations also drew attention, as she was fined $1,000 for failing to engage with reporters after Saturday’s loss in Indiana.
