The Utah Jazz have extended All-Star forward Lauri Markkanen on a five-year, $238-million contract, as confirmed by his agent to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski on Wednesday.
Following a summer filled with trade rumors, Markkanen is now ineligible to be traded during the 2024-25 season.
The Finnish forward was previously linked to a potential deal with the Golden State Warriors. However, the Jazz were reportedly focused on acquiring sophomore forward Brandin Podziemski, leading to the Warriors’ refusal of the trade.
Additionally, the Sacramento Kings and San Antonio Spurs showed interest in Markkanen.
Since joining the Jazz from the Cleveland Cavaliers in 2022, the 7-footer has thrived in his role. Markkanen earned the league’s Most Improved Player award during his first season in Utah, averaging 25.6 points and 8.6 rebounds per game. In the 2023-24 season, his statistics dipped slightly, with averages of 23.2 points and 8.2 rebounds.
Despite Markkanen’s impressive individual performances, the Jazz finished 12th in the competitive Western Conference during both of his seasons with the team.
