The Brooklyn Nets have signed former Detroit Pistons lottery pick Killian Hayes to a one-year contract, with the opportunity to secure a spot on the roster during training camp, as reported by The Athletic’s Shams Charania on Thursday.
Hayes, selected with the No. 7 pick in the 2020 NBA Draft, was born in the United States but represented France internationally before joining the NBA.
The 22-year-old guard had a challenging tenure with the Pistons, where he was waived in February following three-and-a-half seasons. He remained unsigned for the remainder of the season.
Throughout his career, Hayes has averaged 8.1 points, 2.9 rebounds, and 5.2 assists per game across 210 games, with 145 starts. His shooting stats include a career field goal percentage of 38.2% and a 27.7% mark from three-point range.
Hayes’ win shares, at minus-0.5, are the lowest among players from the 2020 draft class.
The Nets are in a rebuilding phase after trading Mikal Bridges to the New York Knicks in the offseason. Cam Thomas and Bojan Bogdanovic, acquired in the Bridges trade, are the only players on the current roster who averaged at least 15 points per game last season.
Hayes is expected to be evaluated as part of the team’s assessment of its young talent.
