Cade Cunningham has inked a lucrative five-year, $224 million rookie extension with the Detroit Pistons, potentially escalating to $269 million if he achieves All-NBA honors, as confirmed by his agents to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski.
The 22-year-old guard posted impressive stats last season, averaging 22.7 points, 7.5 assists, and 4.3 rebounds across 62 games. Despite Cunningham’s standout performance, the Pistons struggled, finishing with a league-worst 14-68 record.
Since drafting Cunningham as the top pick in 2021, Detroit has not surpassed 23 wins in a season. The organization recently underwent changes, appointing Trajan Langdon as president of basketball operations in May. Former Coach of the Year Monty Williams was replaced by ex-Cleveland Cavaliers head coach J.B. Bickerstaff.
During the NBA Draft in June, the Pistons selected G League forward Ron Holland with the fifth overall pick. In the offseason, they bolstered their roster by acquiring Tim Hardaway Jr. from the Dallas Mavericks and signing free agents Tobias Harris and Malik Beasley. Additionally, they re-signed Simone Fontecchio.
