Free-agent point guard Chris Paul has agreed to sign with the San Antonio Spurs, as reported by TNT’s Chris Haynes.
Sources informed ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski that Paul will ink a one-year contract worth over $11 million with San Antonio.
The 39-year-old veteran chose to join the Spurs just hours after being waived by the Golden State Warriors. This move came ahead of Sunday’s deadline to guarantee his $30 million salary for the upcoming season.
Paul is expected to mentor reigning Rookie of the Year Victor Wembanyama on a young Spurs team aiming for improvement. San Antonio has struggled in recent seasons, recording a 22-60 record in each of the last two years and missing the playoffs since 2019.
Paul spent just one season with the Warriors after being traded from the Washington Wizards last July. He averaged a career-low 9.2 points in 58 games (18 starts) last season, with his 6.8 assists per game being his lowest in four years.
The Warriors and Paul had previously agreed to extend the deadline for his guaranteed salary from Friday to Sunday while the team explored trade options. There were discussions about a potential trade sending him back to the Los Angeles Clippers for Paul George, but it did not materialize.
With Paul’s departure, the Warriors’ payroll now stands at approximately $147 million, significantly below the tax threshold of $171.3 million, according to ESPN’s Bobby Marks.
