Following an exceptional collegiate career, Zach Edey has been selected by the Memphis Grizzlies as the 9th overall pick in the NBA Draft.
The 7-foot-4 center from Toronto, known for his dominant presence, was chosen by the Grizzlies in their quest to secure a pivotal position in their lineup. Originally aiming for the 6th pick, negotiations with the Charlotte Hornets fell through, leading Memphis to opt for Edey after UConn’s Donovan Clingan was picked 7th by the Portland Trail Blazers.
Edey declared for the NBA Draft after Purdue’s season ended with a loss to UConn in the national championship game. Despite having eligibility left due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Edey’s move to the professional league was anticipated by Purdue.
During his time at Purdue, Edey led the team to consecutive Big Ten titles and secured top seeds in the NCAA tournament. His achievements include averaging 25.2 points, 12.2 rebounds, and 2.2 blocks per game last season, making him a standout performer nationally. He is the first player since Ralph Sampson in the early 1980s to win consecutive national player of the year awards.
Initially projected as a second-round pick, Edey’s draft stock soared following his impressive performances in the NCAA tournament and the draft combine. His development over recent months has showcased his versatility beyond being a defensive anchor and dominant force inside.
While Edey faces a transition period to adjust to the NBA, the Grizzlies are confident in his upward trajectory based on his collegiate achievements and potential.
