A’ja Wilson made history on Wednesday night, becoming the WNBA’s single-season scoring leader as the Las Vegas Aces defeated the Indiana Fever 86-75. Wilson scored 27 points and grabbed 12 rebounds to propel the Aces to their 14th consecutive victory over the Fever.
Wilson broke the previous record of 939 points, held by Jewell Loyd, with a jumper from the free-throw line with 26.4 seconds left in the second quarter. Wilson surpassed the mark in just 35 games, whereas Loyd achieved it in 38 games last season. Wilson’s previous high was 912 points, accumulated over 40 games last season.
This season, Wilson has amassed 956 points and could become the first player in WNBA history to reach 1,000 points in a single season.
In a critical moment, with Indiana narrowing the gap to 72-66, Wilson scored eight consecutive points for the Aces, pushing their lead to 80-71 with 4:04 remaining. The Aces did not score again until Wilson completed a three-point play with 1:04 left on the clock.
Indiana had an opportunity to close the gap further, but Caitlin Clark missed an open three-pointer. Wilson then assisted Alysha Clark with a corner three-pointer with 34.2 seconds remaining and sealed the victory with a defensive steal.
The Las Vegas Aces remain undefeated against the Indiana Fever this season. The Fever will have another chance to face the Aces on Friday.
For the Aces, Alysha Clark scored 14 points, Tiffany Hayes contributed 12, and Chelsea Gray added 11. Indiana’s Caitlin Clark struggled from beyond the arc, shooting 1 of 10 but ended with 16 points on 6-of-22 shooting overall. Kelsey Mitchell led Indiana with 24 points, marking her third consecutive game scoring 20 or more points.
Wilson, who entered the game 11 points shy of breaking Loyd’s record, scored 10 points in the first quarter, while Hayes added eight, leading Las Vegas to a 20-18 advantage.
