Kevin Durant is poised to leave the 2024 Paris Olympic Games not just as a gold medal winner in men’s basketball but also as part owner of Paris Saint-Germain (PSG), a leading French soccer club.
According to multiple reports, the Phoenix Suns and Team USA superstar is finalizing a deal to acquire a minority stake in PSG, with an official announcement expected in the coming days.
PSG is the largest soccer club in France’s top league, having won the Ligue 1 championship 10 times since the 2012-13 season, including the last three consecutive seasons. The club is a prominent competitor in the UEFA Champions League and has been owned by Qatar Sports Investments since 2011. In 2023, PSG was valued at approximately £4.5 billion ($5.7 billion) when Arctos Partners acquired a 12.5% stake in the club.
Durant joins a growing list of American athletes investing in European soccer. Los Angeles Lakers star LeBron James holds a minority stake in Liverpool F.C., while former NFL players J.J. Watt and Tom Brady have purchased minority stakes in Burnley F.C. and Birmingham City F.C., respectively.
This trip to Paris will undoubtedly be memorable for Durant. In addition to contributing to the United States’ fifth consecutive gold medal in men’s basketball, he is set to return home as a part owner of France’s largest soccer club.
