The Detroit Pistons have parted ways with head coach Monty Williams following a challenging inaugural season, as confirmed by Yahoo Sports on Wednesday. The decision was officially announced by the team shortly before noon.
“Decisions like these are difficult to make, and I want to thank Monty for his hard work and dedication,” Pistons owner Tom Gores stated. “Coaching has many dynamic challenges that emerge during a season and Monty always handled those with grace. However, after reviewing our performance carefully and assessing our current position as an organization, we will chart a new course moving forward.”
“I have great respect for Monty as a coach and as a person, and I am certain he will be successful in his future endeavors,” added Gores. “I sincerely wish him and his family the very best.”
Williams, who previously coached with the Phoenix Suns and the New Orleans Pelicans, had joined the Pistons for his first season in Detroit.
Williams departs with five years and over $65 million remaining on his contract. The team’s performance saw them win only 14 games last season, finishing last in the Eastern Conference. Their season included a notable losing streak of 28 consecutive games, which ended in late December. The decision to relieve Williams of his duties came after the recent appointment of Trajan Langdon as president, though owner Tom Gores ultimately made the final call, as reported by ESPN.
Following the conclusion of the 2022-23 season, former head coach Dwane Casey transitioned to a front-office role, allowing general manager Troy Weaver to make his first head-coaching hire in Detroit. Weaver selected Williams, signing him to a significant six-year, $78.5 million contract with a team option extending the potential value to over $100 million. Weaver and Williams had a prior working relationship from their time in Oklahoma City.
The Pistons’ recent drafts have featured four consecutive lottery picks, including Cade Cunningham, the top overall pick in 2021, along with Killian Hayes (No. 7 in 2020), Jaden Ivey (No. 5 in 2022), and Ausar Thompson (No. 5 in 2023). Hayes started 31 games last season before being waived on February 8. Looking ahead, the Pistons hold the No. 5 overall pick in the upcoming 2024 NBA Draft, scheduled for June 26.
Detroit’s last postseason victory dates back to 2008, with their most recent playoff appearance occurring in 2019.
