The Los Angeles Clippers have solidified their commitment to head coach Tyronn Lue, agreeing to a lucrative contract extension. The deal, reportedly worth $70 million over five seasons, cements Lue’s position as one of the league’s highest-paid coaches.
At 47 years old, Lue was set to become a free agent after the 2024-25 season. However, the Clippers moved swiftly to secure his services for the long term. Earlier speculations linked Lue to the vacant coaching position with the Los Angeles Lakers following Darvin Ham’s departure.
Lue’s potential reunion with LeBron James, with whom he won the 2016 NBA title during their time with the Cleveland Cavaliers, was a topic of discussion. However, Lue’s commitment to the Clippers means he’ll continue leading the team as they transition to their new arena, the Intuit Dome in Inglewood, California.
Under Lue’s guidance, the Clippers have maintained a competitive edge in the league. With a record of 184-134 over four years, they rank sixth in the NBA during his tenure. The team has also seen postseason success, making the playoffs in three of the four seasons, including a Western Conference finals appearance in 2021.
Despite a solid regular season record of 51-31 last year, the Clippers fell short in the playoffs, losing to the Dallas Mavericks in six games in the first round. Looking ahead, the team faces potential roster changes, with both James Harden and Paul George possibly entering free agency this summer. George holds a $48.7-million player option, with reports suggesting interest from the Philadelphia 76ers should he opt to leave Los Angeles.
