Liverpool extended their lead at the top of the Premier League to eight points after a 3-2 comeback win against Southampton on Sunday. Mohamed Salah played a pivotal role, scoring twice in the second half to seal the victory for his team.
Salah leveled the score at 2-2 in the 65th minute, finishing past Southampton goalkeeper Alex McCarthy. He then gave Liverpool the lead with a penalty in the 83rd minute, his 12th goal across all competitions this season, securing Liverpool’s 10th league win in 12 matches.
The match saw Southampton take an early advantage. They were handed the opening goal after Liverpool’s Dominik Szoboszlai intercepted a weak clearance from Southampton’s Flynn Downes and curled it home. However, Southampton responded well, taking a 2-1 lead by the 58th minute. Adam Armstrong scored off the rebound after missing a penalty in the 42nd minute, and Mateus Fernandes finished a counterattack to give the Saints the advantage.
Salah’s brace, however, was enough to turn the game around for Liverpool. His penalty came after McCarthy rushed out of his goal and handled the ball, leading to one of Southampton’s eight errors that resulted in goals this season.
The win pushes Liverpool ahead of defending champions Manchester City, with a chance to extend their lead to 11 points if they defeat City at Anfield next week. Southampton, on the other hand, remain in last place with just four points from 12 matches.
