Philadelphia Eagles wide receiver DeVonta Smith sustained a concussion during Sunday’s narrow 15-12 victory against the New Orleans Saints.
Smith fell to the ground early in the fourth quarter after taking a hard hit that caused his helmet to come off. No penalty was called for the play. He received medical attention on the sidelines before being taken to the locker room for further evaluation.
In Week 3, Smith was the Eagles’ leading receiver, finishing the game with seven receptions for 79 yards prior to his exit. The two-time 1,000-yard pass-catcher had recently signed a three-year, $75-million contract in April.
The Eagles faced the Saints without All-Pro wide receiver A.J. Brown, who is currently managing a hamstring injury. Brown has already missed two games and indicated last week that he expects to be out for a couple more weeks. Additionally, the Eagles lost All-Pro right tackle Lane Johnson to a concussion earlier in the contest.
With both Brown and Smith unavailable, tight end Dallas Goedert took on a significant role for the Eagles, recording 10 receptions for 170 yards. He made a critical third-and-16 conversion late in the fourth quarter with a 61-yard catch-and-run, helping to set up Philadelphia’s game-winning touchdown.
