Carolina Panthers head coach Dave Canales stated that the team is not considering trading quarterback Bryce Young, despite his recent demotion.
“That’s not something we’re really considering,” Canales told reporters on Wednesday, including The Athletic’s Joe Person. “We have a great situation with our quarterbacks right now, with guys that have experience. We love where we’re at.”
Young, the 2023 No. 1 overall pick, was recently moved to the backup role, with veteran Andy Dalton set to start in his place. Rookie Jack Plummer remains on the practice squad.
In 18 games since entering the NFL, Young has completed 59.3% of his pass attempts, totaling 3,122 yards, 11 touchdowns, and 13 interceptions. He has been sacked 68 times.
Despite these challenges, Canales expressed confidence in Young’s potential as a franchise quarterback. “This is a developmentally-minded program. The development didn’t stop,” Canales said, as reported by ESPN’s David Newton. “Every rep he’s out there, we’re evaluating the whole thing, having conversations, and just continuing to push all of our guys, including Bryce, to take that next step.”
Canales also noted that Young had a “fantastic” day working with the scout team.
