The Kansas City Chiefs are bringing back Kareem Hunt to their practice squad following an injury to starting running back Isiah Pacheco. According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the Chiefs have signed Hunt, a veteran running back, to their practice squad.
Pacheco suffered a fractured fibula in a recent game, an injury that is expected to keep him out for six to eight weeks. With Pacheco unavailable, the Chiefs’ active roster now includes veteran Samaje Perine and undrafted rookie Carson Steele as the primary running back options. The team also has Keaontay Ingram on the practice squad.
Hunt, 29, initially joined the Chiefs in 2017. He made a notable impact during his rookie season, leading the NFL with 1,327 rushing yards at an average of 4.9 yards per carry and scoring 11 scrimmage touchdowns. Despite a strong second season where he recorded 14 touchdowns, Hunt was released by the Chiefs in November 2018 following the emergence of a video showing him pushing and kicking a woman in a hotel.
Subsequently, Hunt joined the Cleveland Browns in 2019, where he played for five seasons. While he did not surpass 1,000 rushing yards in any season with the Browns, he accumulated 1,145 yards and 11 touchdowns from scrimmage in 2020. In the 2023 season, Hunt recorded 411 rushing yards with a 3.0 yards per carry average and scored nine rushing touchdowns in 15 games.
Should Hunt remain healthy and be promoted to the active roster, he may provide a valuable asset to Andy Reid’s offense due to his pass-catching capabilities.
The 2-0 Chiefs will have two upcoming road games, facing the Atlanta Falcons in Week 3 and the Los Angeles Chargers in Week 4.
