The Miami-Dade Police Department has released body-cam footage from an incident on Sunday involving Miami Dolphins wide receiver Tyreek Hill. The footage captures Hill being detained and handcuffed near Hard Rock Stadium prior to the Dolphins’ Week 1 game against the Jacksonville Jaguars.
Following the release of the body-cam footage, Hill took to X (formerly Twitter) to write, “Let’s make a change.”
In a statement released Monday, the Miami-Dade Police Department explained that the decision to make available over 105 minutes of body-cam footage was driven by its “commitment to transparency and maintaining public trust.”
Hill, who was detained and later released, expressed confusion about the reasons for his detainment. He stated that he had “no idea” why he was handcuffed and insisted he had not been disrespectful. Hill mentioned that officers informed him he was stopped for “speeding” and “reckless driving.”
Calais Campbell, Hill’s teammate, was also handcuffed while trying to de-escalate the situation.
The Miami-Dade Police Department has called for an immediate review of the incident. Following the Dolphins’ victory, the department announced that one of the officers involved has been placed on administrative duties pending an internal investigation.
Steadman Stahl, president of the South Florida police union, commented that Hill was not “immediately cooperative” with the officers, which led to his handcuffing and being placed on the ground. Stahl explained, “Upon being stopped, Mr. Hill was not immediately cooperative with the officers on the scene who, pursuant to policy and for their immediate safety, placed Mr. Hill in handcuffs. Mr. Hill, still uncooperative, refused to sit on the ground and was therefore redirected to the ground. Once the situation was sorted out within a few minutes, Mr. Hill was issued two traffic citations and was free to leave.”
Hill received two traffic citations: one for careless driving and another for a seat belt violation, as reported by ESPN’s Jeff Darlington.
