The Colorado Rockies have placed catcher Elias Díaz on waivers, according to sources cited by The Athletic’s Ken Rosenthal.
Díaz, who was named the MVP of last year’s All-Star Game, has approximately $1.5 million remaining on his contract and is scheduled to become a free agent after this season.
As a veteran with over five years of MLB service, Díaz is eligible to reject an assignment to the minor leagues if he clears waivers. In such a scenario, he would become a free agent.
The 33-year-old Díaz has recorded a .270/.315/.378 batting line with five home runs in 84 games with the Rockies this season. However, he has experienced significant struggles since July, posting a .479 OPS and a 21 wRC+.
Throughout his 10-year MLB career, Díaz has accumulated a career OPS+ of 82.
