The New York Jets have decided not to trade Haason Reddick despite the pass-rusher’s request to be moved, according to general manager Joe Douglas, who made the announcement on Monday.
Douglas confirmed that the team had informed Reddick of their decision, stating, “We have informed Haason that we will not trade him, that he is expected to be here with his teammates, and that he will continue to be fined per the CBA if he does not report. Since the trade discussions back in March, we have been clear, direct, and consistent with our position. Our focus will remain on the guys we have here as we prepare for the regular season.”
This statement followed reports that Reddick had asked the Jets for a trade. Reddick was traded to the Jets in March after he and his former team, the Philadelphia Eagles, could not agree on a new contract.
Reddick has been absent from the Jets’ training camp as he seeks a contract extension. According to Spotrac, Reddick is set to earn a base salary of $14.25 million in 2024, which is the final year of his contract.
The Jets have a policy of not negotiating with players who are not present at training camp, but a source told ESPN’s Rich Cimini that Reddick will not attend unless his contract dispute is resolved.
At the time of the trade, the Jets reportedly believed that Reddick would be willing to play out the remainder of his contract. However, it has been rumored that Reddick turned down a contract proposal from the Jets, which included a raise for 2024, before the trade was completed.
Reddick has not participated in any part of the Jets’ offseason program.
Reddick was brought in to bolster the Jets’ front seven, especially after the team lost Bryce Huff, who led the Jets with 10.5 sacks last season, to the Eagles in free agency.
The Jets traded a conditional 2026 third-round pick for Reddick, which could become a second-round selection if he plays 67.5% of New York’s snaps and records at least 10 sacks in 2024.
Reddick, a former first-round pick in 2017, tallied 26 sacks during his two seasons with the Eagles. In 2022, he recorded a career-high 16 sacks and led the league with five forced fumbles, earning him a fourth-place finish in Defensive Player of the Year voting.
