Graeme McDowell has been handed a one-tournament suspension by LIV Golf for breaching the circuit’s anti-doping policy.
The Saudi-funded golf series disclosed that the 45-year-old Northern Irishman had used “a decongestant medicine that included a banned substance.” The violation occurred during the LIV Golf Nashville event in June, leading to a fine of $125,000 (£98,000).
McDowell explained that he was dealing with severe congestion prior to the event, which was impacting his sleep. In response, he took an over-the-counter nasal decongestant, unaware that it contained a prohibited substance.
“Ahead of LIV Nashville, I was struggling with severe congestion that was affecting my sleep,” said McDowell, the 2010 US Open champion. “In an effort to manage it, I used a generic nasal decongestant without realising it might be on the banned list.”
“As a professional golfer, I understand the importance of checking all medications and the option to apply for a Therapeutic Use Exemption (TUE). Unfortunately, I did not think to do this due to the over-the-counter nature of this medicine, and I deeply regret the oversight. I fully accept the sanctions imposed by LIV.”
As a result of the suspension, McDowell’s results, along with those of his team, from the LIV Nashville event, will be disqualified. He will also miss the upcoming event in West Virginia, scheduled to begin on 16 August, but is expected to return for the LIV Chicago tournament in September.
Reflecting on the situation, McDowell stated, “I’m proud of my 22-year career and the way I’ve conducted myself through it. Now, I’m focused on moving forward and getting back on the golf course. I look forward to seeing everyone at LIV Chicago.”
