Liverpool is reportedly considering a transfer for Real Sociedad midfielder Martin Zubimendi as the club aims to make its first signing under new manager Arne Slot.
Zubimendi, who was a member of the Spain squad that triumphed in Euro 2024, played as a second-half substitute for Manchester City’s Rodri in the final, where Spain defeated England 2-1.
The 25-year-old has been with Sociedad since 2011, and his contract includes a release clause set at 60 million euros (£51.5 million).
Last season, Zubimendi contributed to Sociedad’s successful campaign, helping the team secure a sixth-place finish in La Liga while scoring four goals in 31 league appearances. Additionally, the Spanish club reached the last 16 of the Champions League in the 2023-24 season, only to be eliminated by Paris Saint-Germain.
If the transfer goes through, Zubimendi will be the first player to join Liverpool under Slot, who succeeded Jurgen Klopp at the helm of the club.
Zubimendi has expressed admiration for former Spain international Xabi Alonso, who played in the same holding midfield role. Alonso developed at Sociedad before moving to Liverpool in 2004. More recently, he managed Sociedad’s B team and is now the head coach of Bayer Leverkusen in Germany.
