Rookie quarterback Jayden Daniels is anticipated to take the field for the Washington Commanders in their first preseason game against the New York Jets on Saturday.
Head Coach Dan Quinn confirmed on Sunday that Daniels will participate, though he did not disclose whether Daniels would start or the duration of his playtime as the No. 2 pick.
“I just love playing football, so I’m happy about it,” Daniels stated. “I mean, I always knew I was going to play. At least I have the opportunity to go out there and play, so I’m excited for it.”
The 2023 Heisman Trophy winner from LSU is viewed as Washington’s likely Week 1 starting quarterback, despite Quinn not officially naming him to the role. Daniels expressed that he does not see this ambiguity as an issue.
“There’s been a whole process,” Quinn explained regarding the decision to have Daniels play against the Jets. “It’s not been a secret at all — but a process of how we’re going to go and get guys ready. And so, the games are important to go and play and get ready.”
During training camp, Daniels has been sharing snaps with veteran quarterback Marcus Mariota. The Commanders are set to visit Tampa Bay on September 8 to kick off the regular season.
