The Los Angeles Dodgers have secured right-hander Jack Flaherty from the Detroit Tigers in exchange for catcher/first baseman Thayron Liranzo and shortstop Trey Sweeney, according to announcements from both teams.
Flaherty, who joined the Tigers on a one-year, $14-million contract during the offseason, delivered an impressive performance. The 28-year-old achieved a 2.95 ERA, 3.11 FIP, and 0.96 WHIP, amassing 133 strikeouts and only 19 walks over 18 starts for Detroit.
This acquisition bolsters the Dodgers’ rotation, which has been affected by injuries. Flaherty is expected to immediately take the No. 2 starter position behind Tyler Glasnow.
Liranzo, ranked as the Dodgers’ No. 3 prospect by Baseball America, recorded a .220/.344/.356 slash line with seven home runs and 30 RBIs in 74 games with High-A Great Lakes. The 21-year-old catcher has also played significantly at first base.
Sweeney, 24, ranked as the Dodgers’ No. 28 prospect by Baseball America, posted a .255/.334/.427 slash line with 13 home runs, 62 RBIs, and 16 stolen bases in 96 games at Triple-A Oklahoma City. The Dodgers initially acquired Sweeney from the New York Yankees in an offseason trade.
