France defender Raphael Varane has signed with Serie A side Como, who recently secured promotion to Italy’s top flight. The 31-year-old Varane, who was a free agent after his Manchester United contract expired this summer, has agreed to a two-year deal with the Italian club.
Before joining Como, Varane enjoyed a distinguished career at Real Madrid, where he won three La Liga titles and four Champions League trophies. He then spent three years at Manchester United. Varane also earned 93 caps for the French national team before retiring from international football last year.
Como, who is making a return to Serie A after a 21-year absence, appointed former Arsenal and Chelsea midfielder Cesc Fabregas as their head coach following their promotion.
“I will meet Cesc again, but this time not as an opponent,” Varane said. “I am very happy, I really like his playing philosophy and his passion for football.”
