American swimmer Torri Huske captured her first Olympic gold medal in the 100m butterfly, surpassing her world record-holding teammate Gretchen Walsh on Sunday. This victory marks the United States’ second gold medal of the 2024 Paris Games and the sixth swimming medal overall.
Huske made a dramatic comeback to out-touch Walsh and Chinese swimmer Yufei Zhang at the finish line. This is Huske’s second Olympic appearance, having previously placed fourth in the 100m butterfly at the 2020 Tokyo Games and earned a silver medal in the 100m relay. Canadian swimmer Maggie Mac Neil, who won gold in this event at the Tokyo Olympics, finished in fifth place on Sunday.
Huske and Walsh are also scheduled to compete in the 100m freestyle later this week. Both swimmers were part of the 100m relay team, which secured silver for the second consecutive Olympics.
