San Francisco 49ers left tackle Trent Williams did not report to training camp due to contract-related issues, head coach Kyle Shanahan confirmed on Wednesday, according to ESPN’s Nick Wagoner.
Shanahan noted that discussions between Williams and the team have been ongoing for some time, as reported by CBS Sports’ Jonathan Jones.
Williams faces a $50,000 fine for each missed day of training camp.
With a $23.01 million average annual value (AAV) on his current contract, Williams ranks third among all left tackles, trailing only Andrew Thomas of the New York Giants ($23.5 million) and Laremy Tunsil of the Houston Texans ($25 million), as per Over the Cap.
Williams is under contract through the 2026 season. His scheduled cap hits for the next three years are approximately $31.5 million, $34.1 million, and $37.8 million, according to Over the Cap.
Despite recently turning 36 on July 19, Williams remains a top performer in the NFL. He has been named to three consecutive first-team All-Pro teams and has earned 11 Pro Bowl selections in a row. Last season, the 6-foot-5, 320-pound tackle participated in 15 games, playing 85% of the offense’s snaps.
In related news, 49ers wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk is also dissatisfied with his contract situation but chose to report to training camp while pursuing a new deal.
