Gary Trent Jr., former guard for the Toronto Raptors, has agreed to a one-year contract with the Milwaukee Bucks, according to his representation as reported by ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski.
Trent will reunite with former Portland Trail Blazers teammate Damian Lillard in Milwaukee, having played together for 2.5 seasons before Trent was traded to the Raptors alongside Rodney Hood in exchange for Norman Powell in 2021.
The 25-year-old averaged 13.7 points, 2.6 rebounds, 1.7 assists, and 1.1 steals per game with the Raptors last season. He shot 39% from three-point range, making an average of 2.5 three-pointers per game. Despite these statistics, it marked a relatively subdued season for Trent, who had averaged 17.3 points per game during his tenure in Toronto in the 2022-23 season.
Trent represents the Bucks’ major acquisition in the current free agency period. The team has also added veteran players Delon Wright and Taurean Prince. Meanwhile, Milwaukee has lost Malik Beasley to the Detroit Pistons, and Patrick Beverley is set to join Israel’s Hapoel Tel Aviv.
Last season, the Bucks finished with a record of 49-33, including a 17-19 record under coach Doc Rivers, and were eliminated in the first round of the playoffs by the Indiana Pacers. Giannis Antetokounmpo, the franchise star, missed the postseason due to a calf injury.
Meanwhile, the Raptors have opted for other perimeter options, selecting Baylor guard Ja’Kobe Walter with the 19th overall pick in the draft and exercising Bruce Brown’s player option for the upcoming season.
