The saga of Tee Higgins’ contract with the Cincinnati Bengals appears to have concluded for the 2024 season. According to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, Higgins and the Bengals will not reach a long-term extension agreement before the deadline on Monday. Consequently, the fifth-year wide receiver will play the upcoming season under the franchise tag and is set to become a free agent in 2025, barring another franchise tag by the Bengals next offseason.
Higgins is slated to earn $21.8 million under the franchise tag for 2024. While a second franchise tag in 2025 is unlikely due to the escalating costs mandated by the collective bargaining agreement, which would require a minimum 20% raise over his 2024 salary, Higgins remains committed to the Bengals for the current season.
Since joining the Bengals as a second-round draft pick in 2020, Higgins has received $25.9 million over his four-year rookie contract. Despite coming off a challenging season marked by injuries, Higgins has been a pivotal part of the Bengals’ offense, serving as the second option alongside All-Pro Ja’Marr Chase.
In 2023, Higgins’ performance was hampered by injuries, limiting him to 42 catches for 656 yards and five touchdowns across 12 games. The Bengals are banking on Higgins’ potential for a strong comeback in 2024 to bolster their bid for title contention. His role will be crucial as the team seeks to rebound from a disappointing season following consecutive AFC championship game appearances, including a Super Bowl berth.
Looking ahead, securing Higgins and Chase long-term as top weapons for quarterback Joe Burrow remains a priority for the Bengals’ front office. However, with Chase also nearing the end of his rookie deal, future contract negotiations pose challenges amidst a competitive market for wide receivers.
As Higgins gears up for the 2024 season under the franchise tag, both he and the Bengals face high stakes in their pursuit of postseason success.
