Spain secured a spot in the Euro 2024 quarter-finals against hosts Germany after overcoming an early setback to defeat Georgia.
In their tournament debut, Georgia initially weathered heavy Spanish pressure before surprising the crowd at Cologne Stadium with an 18th-minute own goal by Robin le Normand, deflecting Otar Kakabadze’s cross into the net.
Despite Georgia’s spirited play, Spain’s persistence paid off with Rodri equalizing with a low shot past goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili. The Spanish dominance continued, culminating in Fabian Ruiz’s header from Lamine Yamal’s cross, and Nico Williams’ powerful strike into the top corner to seal a 3-1 victory. Dani Olmo added a final flourish with a precise finish.
Reflecting on the match, Spain manager Luis de la Fuente acknowledged the challenge posed by Georgia, who exited the competition after an impressive run. “We created many chances,” de la Fuente noted. “We need to value how important this victory is because the opponents were really good.”
Looking ahead to their quarter-final clash with Germany, de la Fuente expressed confidence: “Germany at home will be very strong but we have no fear. We are here to try to win.”
Georgia’s coach Willy Sagnol praised his team’s evolution despite the loss: “The evolution of the team has been absolutely fantastic. Now it’s the end of our journey but I’m sure the next one will be very exciting.”
Spain, maintaining their status as tournament favorites with a flawless group stage, face their toughest test yet against Germany in Stuttgart on Friday.
