Luke Shaw has resumed full training with the England squad, boosting their preparations for the upcoming Euro 2024 match against Slovenia. The Three Lions, currently with four points from their first two Group C games, must secure a victory to secure top spot in the group.
England’s performances in Euro 2024 have faced scrutiny, particularly after a disappointing 1-1 draw with Denmark. Criticism has also been directed at head coach Gareth Southgate’s tactical decisions and the inclusion of Shaw, who has been sidelined since February due to injury. However, Shaw’s return to full training suggests that Southgate’s plan to reintegrate him for the Slovenia game remains on track.
Initially training separately following the Denmark match, Shaw’s participation in full training on Monday alleviates concerns about his readiness. Kieran Trippier, who filled in at left-back during Shaw’s absence, is also recovering from a calf strain sustained against Denmark and participated in full training alongside Shaw.
Shaw, the sole left-footed defender in Southgate’s final squad of 26, last played competitively for Manchester United in February, featuring in the first half against Luton Town before injury forced him off.
England’s alternative options at left-back include Joe Gomez and Ezri Konsa, although both are natural right-footed centre-backs. Jarrad Branthwaite, another left-footed option, was omitted from the final squad, while Ben Chilwell did not receive a call-up following a challenging season with Chelsea.
The return of Shaw provides Southgate with a crucial selection dilemma ahead of the decisive clash with Slovenia, where England will seek to cement their position atop Group C.
