Max Verstappen claimed victory in the Spanish Grand Prix on Sunday at Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya, successfully holding off Lando Norris, who started from pole position.
The win marks Verstappen’s second consecutive triumph after his previous victory at the Canadian GP, and his seventh win out of ten races this season.
Lewis Hamilton of Mercedes completed the podium, finishing third. This extends his streak of at least one podium finish to 18 consecutive seasons. Hamilton’s third-place finish also marks his 198th career podium.
Verstappen’s win in Spain is his third consecutive victory at the circuit, putting him on par with racing legends Jackie Stewart, Nigel Mansell, Alain Prost, and Mika Hakkinen for the third-most wins at the track. Leading the charts are Hamilton and Michael Schumacher with six wins each.
Following the race, McLaren’s Norris advanced to second place in the championship standings for the first time in his career, overtaking Charles Leclerc of Ferrari, who now trails by two points.
George Russell initially led the race on the first lap but settled for fourth place, narrowly keeping Ferrari’s Leclerc at bay in the closing laps. Carlos Sainz, Leclerc’s teammate, finished sixth.
McLaren’s Oscar Piastri secured seventh place, while Verstappen’s teammate Sergio Perez finished eighth. Pierre Gasly led the Alpines to ninth and tenth positions, completing the points-scoring positions.
The Spanish GP marks the beginning of a tripleheader in Formula 1, with the Austrian GP scheduled for next weekend followed immediately by the Silverstone race.
