Aleksandar Pavlovic, the 20-year-old midfielder from Bayern Munich, has been sidelined from Germany’s Euro 2024 squad after falling ill with tonsillitis. Despite making his national team debut on June 3 in a 0-0 draw against Ukraine, Pavlovic missed the recent 2-1 victory over Greece and has been compelled to withdraw from the tournament.
In response to Pavlovic’s unfortunate setback, Germany’s head coach Julian Nagelsmann swiftly nominated Emre Can, the seasoned 30-year-old midfielder and former Liverpool player, to fill the vacancy. Nagelsmann explained, “We want another six in the squad and have therefore decided to re-nominate Emre Can. We wanted to have another player in the squad who has played a lot of games, who knows how to deal with the pressure.”
Can, who has represented Germany 43 times, was chosen over Leon Goretzka of Bayern Munich to join the squad ahead of their opening match against Scotland on June 14 in Munich at 20:00 BST.
The substitution underscores Germany’s strategic adjustment to maintain squad depth and experience heading into the highly anticipated tournament.
