Bayern Munich is reportedly in advanced discussions with Burnley regarding the surprising potential appointment of Vincent Kompany as their new head coach. The Bundesliga club is confident that Kompany is interested in the role, and both parties are working towards agreeing on a compensation fee.
Kompany, 38, is expected to bring his Burnley backroom staff to Munich, including former Wales international Craig Bellamy. This move comes after Bayern’s struggle to find a replacement for Thomas Tuchel, who departed last week after his initial announcement in February.
Bayer Leverkusen’s Xabi Alonso, Germany’s Julian Nagelsmann, and Austria’s Ralf Rangnick have all declined the position. Efforts to persuade Tuchel to remain with the club were unsuccessful, leaving Bayern in search of a new coach.
Despite Burnley’s relegation, Kompany has earned a solid reputation during his managerial stints at Anderlecht and Burnley. He speaks German, a language he learned while playing for Hamburg in the Bundesliga.
Kompany extended his contract with Burnley for five years in 2023 but has remained non-committal about his future following a home defeat by Nottingham Forest on Sunday. His managerial career in England began in June 2022 with Burnley, after managing Anderlecht.
Burnley minority shareholder and former NFL player JJ Watt posted a cryptic message on X: “People often ask if European football ownership helps fill the adrenaline void from playing… There are definitely days.”
