Manchester City’s Erling Haaland finds himself on the shortlist for the Premier League Player of the Season award for the second consecutive year, alongside teammate Phil Foden. The 23-year-old Norwegian international, renowned for his prolific scoring, has been pivotal for City this season, netting 25 goals as they aim for a historic fourth consecutive title.
The nominations also include Arsenal’s Martin Odegaard and Declan Rice, Chelsea’s Cole Palmer, Newcastle’s Alexander Isak, Aston Villa’s Ollie Watkins, and Liverpool’s Virgil van Dijk. The winner will be determined through a combination of public vote and input from a Premier League panel, with the announcement scheduled for May 18.
City manager Pep Guardiola, a four-time recipient of the Manager of the Season award, is once again shortlisted, joined by Mikel Arteta (Arsenal), Jurgen Klopp (Liverpool), Unai Emery (Aston Villa), and Andoni Iraola (Bournemouth).
Haaland made history last year by becoming the first player to claim both the Player of the Season and Young Player of the Season awards, following his remarkable tally of 36 goals in 35 league appearances. Cristiano Ronaldo remains the only player to achieve back-to-back wins in 2006-07 and 2007-08.
Foden, recently named Footballer of the Year by the Football Writers’ Association, boasts 16 league goals and 8 assists this season. City has dominated the Player of the Season accolade in recent years, with Kevin de Bruyne winning in 2019-20 and 2021-22, and Ruben Dias in 2020-21.
Odegaard and Rice have been instrumental in Arsenal’s resurgence, with Odegaard contributing 8 goals and 8 assists, while Rice has notched up 9 goals and 7 assists since joining from West Ham.
Palmer, a summer acquisition for Chelsea, has impressed with 21 goals and 9 assists, while Isak has been prolific for Newcastle with 20 goals and 1 assist. Watkins has enjoyed a fruitful season, netting 19 goals and providing 12 assists, while van Dijk, a former recipient of the award, led Liverpool to Carabao Cup success this season.
Haaland, Foden, Palmer, and Isak have also earned nominations for the Premier League Young Player of the Season, alongside Bukayo Saka and William Saliba (Arsenal), Kobbie Mainoo (Manchester United), and Destiny Udogie (Tottenham).
