The German national football team’s preparations for the upcoming European Championship are facing disruptions due to the success of German clubs in the Champions League.
A potential Champions League final rematch between Borussia Dortmund and Bayern Munich looms large, pending Bayern’s second-leg match against Real Madrid.
Even if Bayern Munich doesn’t progress, Germany coach Julian Nagelsmann will miss key players Toni Kroos and Antonio Rüdiger from Real Madrid during the Euro 2024 training camp in Blankenhain, Germany, from May 26-31.
The Champions League final is scheduled for June 1 in London, necessitating the absence of any German players involved in the final from the Euro 2024 preparations.
Dortmund’s advancement to the final, courtesy of a 1-0 win over Paris Saint-Germain, further compounds the situation.
Notable German internationals from Bayern Munich include Manuel Neuer, Joshua Kimmich, Jamal Musiala, Thomas Müller, and Leroy Sané.
While only Niclas Füllkrug was previously called up from Dortmund, standout performances from Mats Hummels, Nico Schlotterbeck, Emre Can, and Julian Brandt could see them earn a recall when Nagelsmann finalizes his Euro 2024 squad on May 16.
The German national team’s preparations will shift to Herzogenaurach, Bavaria, starting June 1. A friendly match against Ukraine is scheduled for June 3 in Nuremberg, followed by a final tune-up against Greece in Mönchengladbach.
Participants of the Champions League final will join the squad just before the Greece game.
Germany, as the host nation, kicks off its Euro 2024 campaign against Scotland in Munich on June 14, followed by matches against Hungary in Stuttgart on June 19 and Switzerland in Frankfurt on June 23.
