Kirk Cousins’ role as the Atlanta Falcons’ starting quarterback remains firm following the team’s surprising first-round NFL draft pick, according to newly appointed coach Raheem Morris.
The Falcons made waves across the NFL by selecting quarterback Michael Penix Jr. of Washington with the No. 8 pick on Thursday night. This decision raised eyebrows considering Atlanta’s recent signing of Cousins as a free agent to a substantial four-year contract valued at up to $180 million, with $100 million guaranteed.
During the Falcons’ post-draft media availability on Saturday, Morris quelled any speculation of a quarterback controversy. “We came up with a decision, this is what we plan to do,And Kirk does not have to look over his shoulder every time he throws a bad pass. Like, that is not the case.” Morris stated.
“So, I know I’m going to have to tell you guys once or twice that that is not the case. Like, we are here to go win, and we are here to go win it all. We are here to win as much as we can win.”
Cousins reached out to Penix on Thursday night for a “very good conversation,” as disclosed by Penix on Saturday. While Penix declined to elaborate on the specifics of their discussion, he expressed enthusiasm about collaborating with Cousins, noting that Cousins shared his excitement about working together.
According to Cousins’ agent, Mike McCartney, the quarterback was surprised to learn of the Falcons’ draft choice while they were on the clock Thursday night. McCartney conveyed that while Cousins understands the nature of the football business and is prepared to move forward, there was some astonishment regarding Atlanta’s decision to select his apparent successor in the first round.
In the 2023 season, Penix demonstrated his prowess, completing 65.4% of his passes for an FBS-leading 4,903 yards and 36 touchdowns with just 11 interceptions. Despite Washington’s loss to Michigan in the national championship game, Penix’s performance showcased his potential at the professional level.
Morris and Falcons GM Terry Fontenot understood that drafting Penix would generate criticism and much buzz. Penix’s selection at his draft position was unexpected by most experts, particularly considering a team’s recent investment in a high-value quarterback like Cousins. However, they reiterated their faith in their evaluation process, citing Penix’s skills and potential to fit into their succession plan after Cousins.
“I hate for it to be like the story of the draft,” Morris said. “I know it will be. That’s just how our world is based and is driven, but I can’t say it’s annoying. No. Because it’s what people want to see; it’s piqued more interest. What’s [Travis] Kelce’s girlfriend’s name? I feel like her right now. I’m Taylor Swift and Terry is Kelce, I guess.”
