Lionel Messi showcased his prowess once again in the MLS as Inter Miami secured a commanding 4-1 victory over the New England Revolution at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, Massachusetts. Despite an early setback with the Revs’ opening goal, Messi’s clinical performance, including two goals and an assist, led Miami to victory in front of a record home crowd of 65,612 for New England.

With goals in the 32nd and 67th minutes, Messi now boasts a league-leading nine goals in just seven MLS appearances this season. His pivotal role extended beyond scoring, as he provided his seventh assist of the campaign, setting up former Barcelona teammate Luis Suárez for Miami’s fourth goal in the 88th minute.

Suárez’s contribution added to Miami’s dominance, with his precise finish following Benjamin Cremaschi’s earlier goal. Despite facing adversity, including flu affecting several players and midfielder Matt Polster’s hospital visit, the Revolution managed to take an early lead through Tomás Chancalay’s strike after just 37 seconds. However, Messi’s prowess quickly turned the tide in Miami’s favor.
“People in every stadium come to see and support Leo Messi, but after they want their team to win,” Miami head coach Gerardo “Tata” Martino said at a news conference after the match. “We are motivated by the atmosphere each city provides, but we know it incentivizes the rivals, as well. And we try to prepare for that.
Inter Miami’s victory solidified their position at the top of both the Eastern Conference and Supporters’ Shield standings, amassing 21 points from 11 games. In contrast, New England’s struggles continue, remaining at the bottom of the Eastern Conference with just one win and four points from nine matches.
Messi’s standout performance also etched his name in MLS history, becoming the first player to achieve five consecutive games with multiple goal contributions. His nine goals put him ahead in the MLS goal-scoring race, while Suárez’s seven goals further bolster Miami’s attacking prowess.
Inter Miami’s recent success in the MLS, marked by three consecutive wins, reflects a resurgence following their disappointing Concacaf Champions Cup exit. Manager Gerardo “Tata” Martino credited the team’s character and solidity, emphasizing their improved defensive resilience and clinical finishing.
As players return from injury, Inter Miami looks poised to maintain their momentum as they strive for further success in the MLS season.
